Gareth Hobbs | Product Designer | NYC

Hi, I'm Gareth — a product designer based in New York City. I work on complex operational tools, data-dense interfaces, and real-time systems.
I'm the lead product designer at STRATA Critical, where I design software for organ placement, recovery and transport logistics. That includes the case coordination tools clinical teams use day to day, the trip-building software our logistics team uses to construct trip itineraries, and the dashboards hospital teams use to keep track of cases in progress.
I also lead projects for multiple clients with the design agency Brick Factory, including universities, nonprofits and advocacy organizations, doing responsive web design and conversion optimization work. Typically these are large institutional websites with deep frameworks. In my recent redesign of the City University of Seattle website, for instance, I had to design for 60+ degree programs systematically — templates flexible enough to fit every program while still communicating each one's content clearly. Outside of that I tinker with upgrades to the iPhone sleep and activity tracking app I designed and built, which is now live on the App Store.
Some of what I work on is invisible to consumers. It's the dashboards, dispatch tools and case management systems that operations teams sit inside all day, usually in situations where there's a lot of information and not much time to act on it. I spent seven years designing and running live technical systems in experimental theater before this, which is where I got used to working under those conditions.
I like the projects where there's no obvious right answer and a lot of ways to get it wrong. That's where I work best.
